Skating Levels Information

The Ingersoll Skating Club is divided into seven sessions. Each session is of varying skill levels. A description of each of the sessions follows:

CANSKATE Pre-Beginner
:

The skaters learn the basic fundamentals of skating in this 45 minute once a week session. The session consists of professional coaches and amateur coaches also called program assistants. They learn the following and more:

• Falling down and getting up • Skating forwards

• Skating backwards • Gliding on one and two feet

• Turning on the spot • Jumping on the spot

• Balancing on one foot • Making snow

Once they have progressed through this stage, they will start working on the Skate Canada Badges 1 through 6.

CANSKATE Levels 1-6
:

This is a 45 - 60 minute session once again taught by professional coaches and program assistants. Each of the skaters will have a colour sticker on their nametag to indicate the specific stage they are working on. The skaters work on the 6 stages, with each stage consisting of certain skills that need to be performed before passing into the next stage. Once a stage is passed, the skater will be awarded a badge. Each stage continues to expand on the skills previously learnt. Here is a brief overview of the stages and the colour of the stickers:

• STAGE ONE RED: Basic additional skills from Pre-Beginner, skating forward, backwards stopping.

• STAGE TWO BLUE: Skating forwards with speed, gliding and stopping.

• STAGE THREE PINK: Skating backward with speed, gliding and stopping.

• STAGE FOUR ORANGE: Skating and gliding on a curve, turning forwards to backwards.

• STAGE FIVE GREEN: Forward edges, turns and spins.

• STAGE SIX YELLOW: Backwards edges, turns, spins, jumps.

Once the skaters have passed all 5 stages, they are then moved up to the Junior Session. If a skater passes the stage 5 prior to Christmas, they will move up to the Junior Session. Skaters passing after Christmas will remain in the CanSkate session until the next year. If skaters wish to have private lessons from a professional coach, they can contact one of the coaches to set up a time for private lessons depending on the coach’s availability. (see list in handbook)

JUNIOR SESSION
:

These skaters have passed stage 5. The skaters work on the 3 different disciplines of skating. They also receive badges/ribbons for skills passed.

• SKILLS: Edges and turns to music on a set pattern.

• DANCE: Set pattern of steps to specific music.

• FREESKATE: Jumps, spins and solos.

The skaters work on these disciplines in a group format. Skaters can also take private lessons from a professional coach on this session. The skaters work toward trying tests of the 3 disciplines. Skaters may also choose to participate in a skating competition. Once they have passed certain tests of the 3 disciplines, they then move up to the Intermediate Session.

INTERMEDIATE SESSION
:

The skaters now work independently on the 3 disciplines of skating. They receive private lessons from one of the professional coaches. The skaters continue to try tests and attend competitions if they choose to do so. Once they have achieved a certain skill level, they will move up to the Senior Session.

SENIOR SESSION
:

The Senior Session is the same as the Intermediate Session but at a higher skill level. Skaters choose the number of days of the week they would like to skate depending on the sessions available at their skill level.

PARENT & TOT/BEGINNER SKATER
:

This is a ten week program for toddlers and beginners of all ages. It teaches fundamental movement and basic skills such as GO forward, GO backward, STOP, and TURN. The program will follow CanSkate guidelines. The program emphasizes fun and continuous movement. The professional coach encourages and instructs the parents how to assist their children.

LEARN TO SKATE
:

This is a twelve week program that begins in January for beginners of all ages. The program follows CanSkate guidelines teaching basic skating skills.
